October 9, 1973 - Midwest and South of America

The Great American UFO Wave

On October 9, 1973, the United States experienced a surge of UFO sightings during what became known as the Great American UFO Wave of 1973. Witnesses across the Midwest and South reported mysterious glowing objects, hovering craft, and unusual lights moving silently through the night sky.

In Eaton, Indiana, witnesses, including factory workers, reportedly observed a large object hovering for over an hour, with multicoloured lights flashing around its edges. Local police allegedly received approximately 200 calls about the phenomenon.

Nearby in Fort Wayne, reports claimed that hundreds of residents witnessed unexplained aerial activity. Some accounts also described an unidentified radar target at Baer Field, although independent confirmation remains limited.

The wave intensified over the following days. On October 11, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker reported their famous alleged alien abduction in Pascagoula, Mississippi. On October 18, an Army Reserve helicopter crew reported a dramatic encounter with an unidentified illuminated object near Mansfield, Ohio.

The October 1973 UFO wave became one of the most widely publicized UFO flaps in American history, involving numerous civilian, police, and military witnesses. Although many sightings remain disputed or unexplained, the extraordinary volume of reports helped cement 1973 as a landmark year in UFO history.
