October 8, 1981 - Near Kelsey Bay, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada:

The Vancouver Island UFO photograph

On October 8, 1981, Hannah McRoberts captured one of Canada's more intriguing UFO photographs while traveling with her family near Kelsey Bay on Vancouver Island.

During a roadside stop, McRoberts photographed a mountain partially covered by an unusual cloud formation. Neither she nor her family reported seeing anything out of the ordinary at the time. However, when the film was developed, one photograph revealed an unexpected detail: a sharply defined, disc-shaped object appearing to hover above the mountainside.

The object had a flattened circular appearance with what looked like a raised central dome. Its distinct outline prompted questions about whether it represented an unidentified airborne object, a conventional object photographed under unusual circumstances, or some form of photographic deception.

The photograph eventually attracted the attention of Dr. Richard F. Haines, a former NASA research scientist who conducted a detailed examination of the image and its original negative. His investigation included photographic analysis, image enhancement, and interviews concerning the circumstances in which the picture was taken.

Haines reported finding no convincing evidence that the negative had been altered or that the object was suspended by a visible support. In 1987, he published his findings in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, concluding that the object's identity remained undetermined.

Despite these findings, the photograph does not establish that the object was an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Because nobody witnessed it directly, investigators could not independently verify its distance, size, movement, or origin. Possibilities involving an ordinary object or a staged photograph could not be conclusively eliminated.

The Vancouver Island photograph remains an interesting case in UFO research, not because it proves an extraordinary explanation, but because its unusual appearance and subsequent technical examination left questions that the available evidence could not definitively resolve.
