October 6, 1973 - Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Troy, Ohio, USA:
Yom Kippur War and Ohio UFO Wave
On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel, beginning the Yom Kippur War. At nearly the same time, the United States was entering one of the largest UFO waves of the 1970s, with Ohio becoming a major hotspot.
During October, residents and police officers across Ohio reported strange objects and unexplained lights, often described as hovering low in the sky and displaying red, green, and white lights. Police departments received numerous calls as reports intensified around cities including Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Troy.

The wave produced its most famous Ohio encounter on October 18, when Army Reserve Captain Lawrence Coyne and his helicopter crew reported a close encounter with a large, cigar-shaped object near Mansfield.
Although UFO researchers have long noted that the wave coincided with the escalating Yom Kippur War and intense Cold War tensions, no evidence has established a connection between the conflict and the sightings. October 1973 nevertheless remains one of the most remarkable periods in Ohio UFO history.
