September 19–20, 1961 - Near Indian Head, New Hampshire, USA:
The Betty and Barney Hill Abduction
On the night of September 19–20, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving home through New Hampshire’s White Mountains when they noticed a bright object apparently following their car. Near Indian Head, Barney stopped and viewed it through binoculars, later describing a large craft with illuminated windows and humanoid figures inside.

After speeding away, the Hills heard strange beeping sounds and later realized that about two hours of their journey seemed unaccounted for. Betty soon began having vivid nightmares involving the couple being taken aboard a spacecraft.
In 1964, psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon hypnotized them separately. During the sessions, both described being taken aboard a craft and subjected to medical examinations by unusual humanoid beings. Betty also recalled seeing a star map, later controversially associated with the Zeta Reticuli system.
The case became famous after John G. Fuller’s 1966 book The Interrupted Journey. Although the Hills appeared sincere, Dr. Simon did not conclude that an extraterrestrial abduction had actually occurred, and hypnosis is not considered a reliable method of recovering accurate memories.
Despite the controversy, the Hill encounter became one of the most influential UFO cases ever reported, popularizing concepts such as missing time, alien medical examinations, large-eyed beings, and extraterrestrial abduction.
