August 11, 2014 - Houston, Texas, USA:

The Houston, Texas Mass Sighting

During a severe thunderstorm over Houston, Texas, several photos and videos appeared online showing a strange circular formation of bright lights seemingly hovering among the clouds. Lightning flashing behind the formation made the sight especially dramatic, and the images quickly spread online as a possible mass UFO sighting.

One of the best-known videos was recorded at about 8:05 p.m. by Houston musician Andrew Pena, who was driving along the Gulf Freeway near Edgebrook. Pena was attempting to film the lightning and reportedly didn't notice the unusual lights until afterward. His footage appeared to show a ring of lights, sometimes with additional illumination near the center, resembling the underside of a large disc.

A skeptical explanation soon emerged. Fletcher Gray, then a volunteer chief investigator for the Texas chapter of MUFON, concluded that the prominent circular formation was likely a reflection of a Houston highway light fixture in the vehicle's window, creating the illusion of lights hovering against the distant clouds.

However, multiple photographs and clips circulated online, and their origins were often unclear. Some may simply have been frames from Pena's video, while other explanations included reflections, image manipulation, or a light-equipped drone.

Ultimately, the best-known 2014 Houston Lights footage has a convincing reflection explanation, but the confused origins of the other images make it difficult to determine whether every photograph associated with the event had the same cause.
