August 20, 1966 - Finland, Minnesota, USA:

The Finland, Minnesota UFO Incident

On August 20, 1966, a U.S. Air Force radar operator in Duluth detected an unidentified object traveling northeast approximately 45 miles southwest of Finland, Minnesota. On the next radar sweep, the target had apparently stopped. It remained essentially stationary over the Finland area for approximately 10 minutes.

The Air Force responded by scrambling two F-102 Delta Dagger interceptors from Duluth. According to the account published by Northern Wilds Magazine, the pilots closed to within approximately six miles of the object and described it as a flat, gray disc roughly 30 feet (9m) in diameter.

As the fighters approached, the object reportedly accelerated away. Radar subsequently detected it near Grand Marais, roughly 50 miles east of Finland along the Lake Superior shore, before the target disappeared.

What makes the story noteworthy is the reported combination of ground radar tracking, an extended period of hovering, a military interception, and visual observations by fighter pilots. However, the Northern Wilds article is a modern secondary account published in December 2025, and I haven't found a contemporaneous Air Force report in this search that independently verifies all of those details. So the pilot description and interception details are best presented as reported claims rather than firmly established facts.
