July 23, 1999 – Van Horn, Texas, USA:

The Van Horn, Texas Trucker Sighting

The Van Horn, Texas trucker sighting is a relatively obscure but intriguing UFO report that occurred on the night of July 23, 1999, near Van Horn, Texas, along Interstate 10 in the rugged desert of West Texas. The incident became known after it was reported to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) shortly after it took place.

According to the report, a female long-haul truck driver was traveling westbound through Van Horn at approximately 11:00 p.m. while listening to her CB radio. As she drove, she heard several eastbound truck drivers suddenly asking one another, "What is that?" Their conversations made it clear that multiple truckers were observing the same unusual object in the sky.

Unable to get a clear view herself while driving, she woke her husband, who had been sleeping in the truck's sleeper berth. Looking through the truck's windows and mirrors, he reportedly observed what he described as a classic disc-shaped object. He said the object was illuminated by eight to ten bright blue and white lights, with the white lights appearing as intense strobe lights. According to the witness, the object was flying at an estimated altitude of 1,000 to 1,500 feet (300 to 450 meters) and was moving back and forth rather than traveling steadily in a single direction. The exceptionally clear desert sky made the object easy to observe.

One of the most notable aspects of the case is that it was not an isolated sighting. Throughout the encounter, numerous truck drivers on the CB radio continued discussing the object, indicating that several independent witnesses were observing the same phenomenon simultaneously over the same stretch of highway. The report estimated that approximately ten witnesses saw the object, although the exact number is unknown.

Unlike many close-encounter reports, there were no claims of missing time, electromagnetic interference, physical traces, or direct interaction with the object. It simply remained visible for several minutes while maneuvering before the westbound truck continued its journey, leaving the object behind. The total duration of the sighting was estimated to be about five minutes.

No official investigation or explanation is known to have been released. Over the years, several conventional possibilities have been suggested, including an aircraft viewed under unusual lighting conditions, a military aircraft operating within one of the nearby training areas, or an experimental aircraft, as West Texas contains extensive military airspace. Others have proposed that the witnesses may have misidentified lights under the exceptionally clear atmospheric conditions common to the region.

Despite these possibilities, no explanation has been able to account for all of the reported details. The witnesses consistently described a disc-shaped object flying at relatively low altitude, displaying bright blue and white lights while maneuvering back and forth rather than following a conventional flight path. Combined with the fact that multiple independent truck drivers reported observing the object simultaneously, the case has remained listed in UFO literature as an unexplained multiple-witness sighting.

Although the Van Horn incident is not as well known as Texas cases such as the Cash–Landrum incident of 1980 or the Stephenville UFO sightings of 2008, it remains an interesting example of a multi-witness highway encounter, in which numerous professional drivers independently reported seeing the same unusual aerial object over the same stretch of Interstate 10 on the same night.
