For generations, these files have fueled intrigue, speculation, and fascination among skeptical Americans questioning one of humanity’s biggest mysteries: Are we truly alone in the universe?

On Friday, the Pentagon began releasing a trove of “never-before-seen” files tied to unidentified anomalous phenomena — better known to the public as UFOs — unveiling decades of closely guarded government records that have fueled mystery, speculation, and debate for generations.

For generations, the files have captivated skeptical Americans, fueling endless intrigue and speculation over one of humanity’s oldest questions: Are we truly alone in the universe?

The long-awaited release comes nearly a month after President Donald Trump teased what might be inside, telling a conservative audience that the Department of Defense would soon unveil some “very interesting documents” — hinting at revelations that could reignite public fascination with the UFO phenomenon.

The first batch of the long-awaited files on what the government now calls Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) is being uploaded to a dedicated government website, https://www.war.gov/UFO/,where Pentagon officials say additional documents will continue to be released “on a rolling basis” as the archive expands.

“We’re going to be releasing a lot of things that we haven’t,” “I think some of it’s going to be very interesting to people.”

Trump Said.

“I think some of it’s going to be very interesting to people.”

“The American people can now access the federal government’s declassified UAP files instantly,” the press release said. “The latest UAP videos, photos, and original source documents from across the entire United States government are all in one place — no clearance required.”

The newly released documents stop short of revealing the sweeping extraterrestrial cover-up that many conspiracy theorists have long suspected. Nowhere in the files is there evidence that the U.S. government has interacted with beings from another world — or possesses proof that extraterrestrials have ever visited Earth. Instead, the archive delivers hundreds of pages of reports, eyewitness accounts, photos, and videos, leaving the public to sift through the material and draw their own conclusions.

The growing collection already includes more than 160 files documenting over 400 incidents from around the globe. Some eyewitness testimonies were recorded as recently as last year, while other reports stretch back to the 1940s, offering a decades-long glimpse into unexplained aerial encounters.

Much of the declassified footage consists of grainy infrared video captured by U.S. military sensors, accompanied by blurry images showing little more than glowing lights, dark shapes, and strange objects moving across the sky. While many of the visuals remain difficult to interpret, they are certain to fuel renewed debate among skeptics and believers alike.

Among the most fascinating entries in the newly unsealed trove are incidents connected to the Apollo 11, Apollo 12, and Apollo 17 moon missions. During a 1969 post-mission debriefing, astronaut Buzz Aldrin recalled seeing “little flashes inside the cabin, spaced a couple of minutes apart” as he attempted to fall asleep aboard Apollo 11. In another account, Aldrin described observing “what appeared to be a fairly bright light source,” which the crew cautiously speculated might have been “a possible laser.”

During the 1969 Apollo 12 mission, astronaut Alan Bean reported witnessing mysterious “flashes of light” that he described as “sailing off into space,” adding another strange entry to the growing archive of unexplained sightings connected to America’s lunar missions.

Years later, during Apollo 17 — the final mission of the Apollo program in 1972 — crew members observed what they described as “very bright particles” tumbling and rotating far off in the distance. Astronaut Harrison Schmitt compared the dazzling phenomenon to “the Fourth of July,” capturing the surreal nature of the unexplained lights drifting through deep space.

Some of the newly released documents reveal that certain sightings were quickly explained away. One such case occurred on Sept. 5, 1948, when military crew members flying 30,000 feet above the Netherlands reported spotting an unidentified aircraft capable of “sudden accelerations and then a climb.” But within months, intelligence officials concluded the mysterious object was most likely a jet-powered craft using “rocket assists with tremendous reserve power.”

Many other incidents, however, remain unresolved. The files often present only raw descriptions and eyewitness testimony, leaving the mystery open-ended and the conclusions up to the reader.

One of the more intriguing entries comes from the 1965 Gemini 7 mission, when astronaut Frank Borman radioed Mission Control about a strange object roughly four and a half hours into the flight. Referring to a “bogey at 10 o’clock high,” Borman prompted confusion from Houston before clarifying what he was seeing: “It looks like hundreds of little particles going by to the left out about three or four miles.”

The archive also includes reports from 2020 to the present day, featuring U.S. Air Force mission logs documenting “potential” UAP sightings. Most of the entries offer few details, often omitting exactly what was seen or where the incidents took place.

Scattered throughout the files are decades of reports submitted by civilians and military personnel alike, dating back to the 1940s. Some accounts remain partially redacted, including a September 2023 FBI FaceTime interview with a drone operator who, along with several colleagues, witnessed a mysterious “bright light over the horizon” near a U.S. test site.

According to the documents, portions of the report were withheld “to protect the identity of eyewitnesses, the location of government facilities, or potentially sensitive information about military sites not related to UAP.”

The witness described seeing “a linear object with a super bright light on the east side of the object.” The light was reportedly so intense that bands could be seen within it. The object itself was said to appear metallic gray, lacking wings or visible exhaust, and was estimated to be larger than a drone but smaller than a Boeing 737 — roughly the length of one or two Black Hawk helicopters.

Witnesses claimed the object hovered approximately 5,000 feet above the ground before suddenly moving east to west and vanishing within seconds. Moments later, the sky appeared completely clear, and the object could not be located again.

For years, lawmakers on Capitol Hill — alongside everyone from respected scientists to outspoken conspiracy theorists — have pushed for the release of these records. Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced support for greater transparency surrounding UFO and UAP investigations.

“The American people have asked for more transparency on these topics, and President Trump is delivering,” the Pentagon said in its press release.

“While past administrations sought to downplay or discourage public interest in these mysteries, President Trump is committed to providing maximum transparency so Americans can examine the information and decide for themselves what to believe,” the release stated.

Still, officials cautioned that the disclosure comes with an important warning.

“While all of the files have been reviewed for security purposes, many of the materials have not yet been fully analyzed or resolved for possible anomalies,” the Pentagon noted — leaving open the possibility that some of the newly released incidents may remain unexplained for years to come.

The interagency push to make the UFO files public even has its own acronym — PURSUE, short for the Presidential Unsealings and Reporting System for UAP Encounters — underscoring just how structured this latest transparency effort has become.

Officials say the rollout is being modeled in part on the Department of Justice’s approach from December, when it began releasing the Epstein files in phases rather than all at once.

Still, the debut hasn’t been entirely smooth. The government’s UFO document portal reportedly experienced early technical issues, with users encountering glitches as the long-awaited files first went live — a reminder that even historic disclosures can stumble at launch.
