Mutual UFO Network

The story of MUFON begins on May 31, 1969—though back then, it was simply the Midwest UFO Network, a small but ambitious effort rooted in the American heartland. What started as a regional initiative quickly outgrew its borders, evolving into a global force in UFO research. With that growth came a new name—the Mutual UFO Network—while keeping the now-iconic acronym, MUFON, intact.

At the helm in those early days was Allen Utke, a chemistry professor at Wisconsin State University, who helped lay the foundation for what MUFON would become. Just a year later, leadership passed to Walter H. Andrus, Jr., whose nearly three-decade tenure shaped MUFON into one of the most recognized UFO organizations in the world.

As the years went on, new leaders stepped in to guide the organization through changing eras of UFO investigation—John F. Schuessler, James Carrion, Clifford Clift, and David MacDonald each leaving their mark. Leadership shifts, including a notable transition at the 2013 MUFON Symposium in Las Vegas, reflected an organization constantly adapting to new challenges and discoveries.

Then, in July 2020, in a full-circle moment, David MacDonald returned to lead MUFON once again—this time as Executive Director—continuing the legacy of an organization that has spent decades chasing answers to one of humanity’s greatest mysteries.
